The Reign of Big Studio Films at the Global Box Office

The dominance of Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire at the global and international box office has been unrelenting for the past four weekends. Despite the lack of wide releases on a global scale since the beginning of the year, major titles like this one continue to attract audiences. Noteworthy mentions also include Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4, which is set to surpass $500M globally soon, and WB/Legendary’s Dune: Part Two, inching closer to the $700M mark worldwide. This trend marks a better-than-expected start to the first quarter of the year.

GxK brought in $21.6M in 77 overseas markets during this frame, experiencing only a 42% drop in holdovers. With an international total of $313.6M and a global total of $485.2M, the film is outperforming its predecessors. In like-for-like international markets, GxK is tracking 55% ahead of Godzilla, 22% higher than Meg 2: The Trench, 13% over Godzilla Vs Kong, and is on par with Dune 2 and Kong: Skull Island. A standout market for GxK has been China, where it regained the No.1 spot amidst stiff competition, with a total of $119.3M. Other top markets include Mexico ($30.2M), UK ($15.9M), India ($14M), and Australia ($10.7M). Notably, GxK has become the biggest WB movie ever in India, surpassing even Joker. The film has also brought in $40M from IMAX screenings worldwide.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has shown remarkable staying power, with significant increases in markets with school vacations. Despite a 32% overall drop, the film saw notable boosts in France and Germany. With $15.3M added in this session across 82 overseas markets, Kung Fu Panda 4 has crossed the $300M milestone internationally. The total global earnings stand at $480.3M, with top markets being China ($47.3M), Mexico ($34M), UK ($23.1M), Germany ($15.2M), and France ($11.8M).

Dune: Part Two is on track to reach $700M globally, with $4.2M added in the latest session from 74 markets. Despite an expected drop in its 8th weekend of release, the film has amassed $419.2M internationally and $695.8M globally as of now. With much anticipation for the upcoming markets, Dune’s impressive performance is set to continue in the coming weeks.
