Rivian Automotive has recently announced a major redesign of its all-electric R1 pickup and SUV models, set to be released in 2025. The company claims to have made significant improvements in range, performance, and computing power, thanks to the integration of Nvidia chips into the new models.
One of the most prominent changes in the new R1 vehicles is the significant increase in computing power. Rivian states that the new models will deliver 10 times more performance than their predecessors, courtesy of the dual Nvidia DRIVE Orin processors that power the “Autonomy Compute Module.” These processors will be instrumental in enabling advanced driver-assistant features, making the driving experience more seamless and safe for users.
In addition to the enhanced computing power, Rivian has revamped over half of the hardware components in the second-generation R1 models. The company has also reengineered the batteries and electrical architectures of the vehicles, aimed at improving overall performance and efficiency. These changes mark a significant step forward for Rivian’s flagship vehicles, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and quality.
The updated models will continue to use a “2170 cylindrical cell” battery pack, but with improvements in the pack enclosure to simplify manufacturing and reduce mass. Furthermore, the new R1 vehicles will offer three motor configurations – dual, tri, and quad – each providing different levels of power and performance. The top-end quad-motor variant will deliver an impressive 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 pound-feet of torque, allowing for a lightning-fast acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds.
Rivian has announced that deliveries for the 2025 R1S and R1T models will commence immediately. The pricing for the second-generation R1S SUV will start at $75,900, marking a $1,000 increase from the current models. Top-end trimotor models of the R1S and R1T are expected to start around $106,000 and $100,000, respectively. The availability of the new models will play a crucial role in Rivian’s future growth, as the company aims to expand its customer base and increase sales.
The updated Rivian R1S and R1T models represent a significant leap forward in electric vehicle technology, showcasing Rivian’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation. With improved range, performance, and computing power, these new models are poised to set a new standard in the electric vehicle market. As Rivian continues to evolve its flagship vehicles, it is evident that the company is determined to deliver quality and performance without compromise, appealing to a wide range of consumers looking for cutting-edge electric vehicles.
