The Future of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An Analysis

The highly anticipated Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Horizon saga has faced a setback as it has been postponed from its initial release date of August 16. This decision comes following the lackluster performance of Chapter 1 at the box office over the July 4th weekend. With a core audience of 50+, the filmmakers have chosen to give viewers more time to discover the first installment, whether through digital platforms or in theaters. Chapter 1 will be available for digital purchase on July 16 while still running in cinemas.

There are currently no plans to release the sequel, Chapter 2, directly on Max. However, there is a possibility of a theatrical day-and-date release strategy, although this is still under consideration. Despite reports suggesting that the movie has been pulled from theatrical release, the filmmakers have not ruled out the possibility of Chapter 2 hitting the big screen. The intention behind delaying the release is to allow Costner’s core Yellowstone audience to first experience Chapter 1 and build anticipation for the sequel.

The Horizon franchise has reportedly allocated a budget of over $100 million, with the first movie opening to a modest $11 million and a domestic total of $23.4 million. While these numbers may be typical for a western film, the high production cost raises concerns, especially considering the lukewarm critical reception and audience reactions. Chapter 1 received a 48% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B- CinemaScore, indicating mixed feedback from viewers and critics alike. Costner’s previous directorial venture, Open Range, performed slightly better at the box office with an $14 million opening and a $58.3 million total domestic gross.

A representative from New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures released a statement regarding the decision to delay Chapter 2’s release date. They explained that the goal is to give audiences a better chance to discover the first installment of Horizon through various platforms before the sequel hits theaters. The statement also expressed gratitude towards exhibition partners and audiences for their support and enthusiasm for the Horizon saga. The filmmakers hope that expanding the release window will enhance the viewing experience for Chapter 2.

While the future of Kevin Costner’s Horizon franchise may be uncertain at this point, it is evident that the filmmakers are taking a strategic approach to ensure the success of Chapter 2. By allowing more time for audiences to discover and appreciate the first installment, they aim to generate excitement and anticipation for the sequel. However, the high production cost and mixed reception of Chapter 1 pose challenges that need to be addressed moving forward. Only time will tell if Chapter 2 will live up to the expectations set by its predecessor.
